How often should my child practice?

I hear this question all the time from parents. This question has many possible answers. Jascha Heifetz, an internationally-acclaimed violinist, played every day except for Sundays. Dr. Suzuki said, "Only practice on the days you eat." In my experience, making exceptions to an everyday practice routine turns very quickly into only practicing a few days a week. Consistent, daily practice sessions yield exponentially more growth than a marathon practice session the day before a lesson, even if the same amount of time was spent. Should your child practice every day? Only on days they eat breakfast.
